The island of Aitutaki is 140 nautical miles north of Rarotonga and is famous for its stunning lagoon of milky greens and light blue hues, silky white sand bars, and uninhabited islets (motus) with palm-fringed beaches. Aitutaki has 15 small motus and a main volcanic island with a height of 123 meters; it has a population of approximately 1700. The main island is situated in the northwest of the lagoon, measuring 9km long and 2.5km at its widest point.
