Getting around the Cook Islands is part of the adventure. Whether you hop on a public bus, hire a scooter, or join a guided tour, exploring these islands is relaxed, safe and full of unexpected delights around every corner.
Travel is a breeze around Rarotonga – the island is only 32 kilometres in circumference. Two main roads circle the island: the Ara Tapu, a sealed coastal road winding through villages and past beaches; and the older inland road, which meanders through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmland. Vehicles are driven on the left in the Cook Islands, with a maximum speed of 30 km/h in towns and villages and 50 km/h in less populated areas.
Visitors holding a full driver’s licence from their home country may drive in the Cook Islands for the class of vehicle they are licensed for. A compulsory practical test applies for motorcycles or scooters if your licence does not cover this class.
Around Rarotonga
A wide range of vehicles, motor scooters and bicycles are available for hire from rental companies around Rarotonga at daily or weekly rates, with many resorts also offering on-site hire. Taxis and a reliable public bus service operate island-wide – buses depart on the hour, circumnavigate the island in approximately 50 minutes, stop frequently along the way, and will pull over anywhere on request. It’s an economical and wonderfully local way to travel.
For something more special, Raro Tours offers private VIP transfers as well as a full range of guided tours – from air-conditioned coaches and electric tuk tuks to 4WD vehicles, self-drive buggies, quad-bikes and bicycles. Whether you want a comfortable overview or to venture off the beaten track, there’s a tour to suit every style of explorer.
Aitutaki and the Outer Islands
Air Rarotonga connects Rarotonga to most of the Southern Group islands on a regular schedule, as well as a few of the Northern Group. Just 45 minutes by air, Aitutaki offers vehicle, scooter and bicycle hire, though there is no public transport on the island. On many of the outer islands, transport options are more limited, typically scooters and bicycles only.
We strongly recommend arranging vehicle or bicycle rental prior to arrival on any outer island to ensure availability and a smooth start to your stay.
